Collage is a wonderfully expressive medium. You can use fragments of text, bits of old maps, newsprint, strips torn from magazines, anything that is relevant to the picture you are creating. It can be applied using matt medium which you also paint over each layer to make it waterproof. Using a roller, brushes, sponges etc. you can paint over it, removing or thinning out the paint where you want the collage to show through.

Introduction to Shanty Towns. These pictures are all sold. They are all collage/mixed media with a very distressed frame! – and glass. Many have been commissions – others have been sold at exhibitions. Click to enlarge because it is worth seeing all the signs and notices which I have photographed and used many times in my collages. They say quite a lot about India today. The high rise buildings depict the contrasts of wealth and poverty. Whenever I think I won’t do another of these pictures, someone asks for one which is why there are so many. The sale price framed is between £99 and £140, depending on size and the amount of detail.

This is bigger than my first Shanty Town. That one sold so quickly at the last exhibition that I thought I’d do another for the next. Well, any excuse!

It needs to be viewed large size to make any sense as it contains lots of signs, notices and fragments of newsprint which convey messages about the extremes of wealth and poverty in India today.
