Shanty life
This was a huge picture, a commissioned piece. I had such fun as it developed.

My shanty towns all have similar things in them but the atmosphere is very different in each one.
I started with an abstract skyline but the foreground is always representational.
This is bigger than my first Shanty Town. That one sold so quickly at the last exhibition that I thought I’d do another for the next. Well, any excuse!
These pictures began with newspapers which I collected around India. I love the different scripts and I soon found a use for them as high rise buildings.
In this picture I am depicting the fragility of the little community in the foreground compared with the mighty skyscrapers in the background. I also embellished the frame and mount with bits of Hindi script.
Daybreak and the day’s tasks begin.
With its crazy, chaotic background, this collage could be described as semi-abstract.
Double-click to enlarge and try to read the words on the picture. Those bits were grafted from photos. On the right hand side of the building at the front it says ‘are done with latest machines with sahsfacaion in our shop’!
Collage is such fun to do. Sometimes I have to buy something I don’t particularly like, because I need the packaging – in this case the mesh bag! Kiwi fruit anyone?
When I found a huge frame, I couldn’t resist buying it, to create another Shanty Town. I sold it quite quickly!
